Spanish I, A Cookbook of Healthy Recipes Project

November 17, 2017 -

Dear Trivium families,
As part of a class project, and in cooperation with the S2MART program and AIM Peñasco organization, Mrs. Acherbo’s 9thgrade Spanish I class will assist a community of scholars in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Mexico. These are dedicated scholars who wish to succeed academically, but face a myriad of challenges. One of these challenges, and the one our scholars will help remedy, is malnutrition.
In order to provide community assistance with this issue, the S2MART program and the AIM Peñasco organization have asked our Spanish I Trivium scholars to write a simple cookbook of healthy recipes in Spanish that could provide some healthy, and easy to prepare recipes to share with the students in Mexico. The recipes must be written in Spanish, must contain items that are readily available in that part of Mexico, are affordable, and easy for young adults to prepare. When developing these recipes, scholars must keep in mind that some families do not have running water, or a stove.
To further support the students, we would like to enlist your support by asking for non-perishable food donations. The food donations, and the cookbooks that our students are currently writing in Spanish will be personally delivered during Winter Break.  The ten recipients of these items have been selected by our scholars, after reading a biography in Spanish on fifteen students who are currently receiving assistance by AIM Peñasco.
Trivium scholars have embraced this project, demonstrating great character, a loving heart, and dedication to the Spanish language. In an effort to get to know the students in Mexico, our scholars have established communication in Spanish, via letters, with the students in Puerto Peñasco. This Friday, the letters that the students in Puerto Peñasco have written for Trivium scholars will be delivered to our school.  Our 9th grade students are thrilled to have established a rapport with their counterparts in Rocky Point, as this project has allowed them to apply the Spanish language skills that they have acquired, while being of assistance to those in need.
We thank you in advance for any assistance that you may provide in supporting our donation. Donation bins will be located in the front office. May you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Please bring  regular-sized serving cans/packages (no industrial-sized portions). Suggested items for donation include: Corn, Beans – any kind, Fish, Chicken, Vegetable or Chicken Broth, Rice, Cereal, Minced garlic, Salsa, Corn tortillas, Raisins, Peanut butter, Oil.
Sincerely,

Mrs. Acherbo-Eberenz and her 9th grade scholars
